Shannon Watts introduced me to the Revival Soy line over 4 years ago. Shannon is a post op like me and she has grown to be a very good friend over the past 4 years. I love her and I love reading her blog www.bariatricdiva.com
Shannon is over 10 years post op and has had her fair share of complications post op however, she shines brightly in our bariatric community. If my review was on Shannon, I give her 10 bright shining stars.
Now, about those protein bars. Revival Doctor-Formulated Soy Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter Paradise. (Note picture above)

Taste speaking the bar is very good, I do not taste the protein taste that I generally taste in Soy products. I would give this bar 7 shining stars on taste. While I like the taste, I do not like the texture of the protein “sort of resembles rice crispies, BUT, some people love that!”. I would rather have a creamy dark chocolate bar to bite my teeth into, (but who wouldn’t right) Let’s remember this is protein, a fuel for our body not a Godiva bar. I think this is one of the things often over looked in tasting protein products, of course it won’t taste like our pre-op foods, but remember what the scales said pre op. In other words… this tastes great compared to other protein bars, but not when we compare it to Godiva chocolate. Let’s be fair to the protein companies here!
Reality sit in on this bar when I look at the stats. It is a pretty good size bar, and at 7 years post op, I can eat the whole thing. I CAN’T BELIEVE I ATE THE WHOLE THING… and yes I did. It was my lunch on Tuesday, and then I went to visit with a friend while my stomach grumbled like it was fighting a war. Then on to visit another friend as I prayed no NONPRINCESS actions would escape my body. One, it would be loud and embarrassing and that would just STINK!
20 Sugar Alcohols does not do my body or those in the same room with me good. If you tolerate Sugar alcohols OR if you just really don’t mind making a not so joyous noise, then these are GREAT! I however speak loudly of the actions for a couple of days.
Fat is 9 grams, Protein 20 and total carbs is 30 grams, 20 of those are like I said Sugar Alcohols. (We do absorb calories from Sugar alcohols, we malabsorb the amount just like in other foods, but yeah we do absorb) Remember the story that floated around a few years back that SA’s were like free calories and we don’t absorb them… that eating them was like swallowing a bread wrapper… hmm not so much. Only 2 grams of sugar and 5 grams of fiber and that lowers the Carb content to 25 grams. Now as for the diabetic scale and effecting the glycemic scale, for that you CAN subtract the SA’s making this Impact carbs of 5gms. So use these as a meal replacement not to just sit around and nash on.
If you have the control of eating only half of this bar, those stats are pretty good, but if you have issues with binging on snacky foods this bar can be the devil in a wrapper. You decide. I have been in both places. I used to use binge on them, but now, I am able to use them for a meal.
This is a nice portable protein, as they are individually wrapped, and who really minds if it gets a little warm and melts the chocolate coating on the peanutbutter center? Not me, you?
It is also a soy protein verses whey, a good thing for those post op vegetarians.
Would I chose this bar? Yes I would. I do eat these, especially if I am traveling. My key is to not abuse these bars, do not eat them as a snack. Treat them as they are fuel for our bariatric bodies.
We must create a happy balance in our lives, where we enjoy the food, but we enjoy the health and wellness benefits just as much.
So with everything added together I score this bar with 7 1/2 shiny stars. In the Chocolate Razzberry Zing the bar automatically bumps up to a 8 1/2 stars. I like it that much better, so I imagine if you like Peantbutter and Choc the Paradise bar would be an 81/2 for you.
